5 Strong Alternatives: Find the Right Workout Tracker

Changing your workout tracker should solve a specific problem. Before moving years of Strong history, decide whether you need a different logging experience, a training program, connected AI or a better fit for your budget.

Strong already covers routines, rest timers and workout history. These five alternatives offer different reasons to move. The order is not a scored ranking: Setlane is our app, and the most suitable choice depends on what you want to change.

1. Setlane: discuss your training log with an assistant

Setlane is worth considering if you already use ChatGPT or Claude and want the conversation grounded in completed workouts. Read access supports analysis; editing access supports approved actions such as saving routines. Gym logging can work offline after setup, while assistant access requires the internet.

The free plan includes three routines, five custom exercises, 90-day history and 60 AI tool calls per month. It does not remove Strong’s three-template constraint or offer a direct history import. Choose it for the connected workflow, not as an unlimited free replacement.

2. Hevy: carry over Strong history and train with friends

Hevy has an officially documented Strong CSV import, a social feed and apps for iPhone, Android, Apple Watch and Wear OS. That makes it a practical candidate if retaining your history or a watch is central to the move. Its free tier supports four routines and seven custom exercises.

Follow Hevy’s import instructions for your exported file; its tutorial specifies exporting Strong data in English. After import, check exercise names, units and several old sessions. A successful import is worth verifying before relying on the new charts.

3. Alpha Progression: add programming and progression guidance

Alpha Progression’s Pro tools include a personalized plan generator, set-by-set weight and rep recommendations, periodization and deloads. This addresses a different need from simply recording a routine: help deciding what to do next. You can still create plans manually and keep control of your exercise choices.

Consider it when planning is the missing piece in Strong. The paid programming features cost more than Strong PRO at the published monthly and annual prices. A generated target is something to assess in your own training context, not a reason to ignore technique or discomfort.

4. FitNotes: keep a straightforward Android log for free

FitNotes describes its Android app as free and ad-free. It offers routines, exercise history and progress tools without making a paid subscription the starting point. It suits someone who already has a program and mainly wants a place to record it.

This refers to the Android app from fitnotesapp.com. It will not replace Strong on an iPhone or Apple Watch.

5. Boostcamp: follow a program rather than build every day

Boostcamp combines a program library with workout logging. Its free tier includes training programs and core tracking; Pro adds exclusive programs and advanced analysis. It is a candidate when you like keeping records but want the training structure supplied alongside them.

Check the exact program you intend to follow before subscribing. Its annual plan is $59.99 billed at once; the advertised $4.99 monthly equivalent is not a monthly subscription. The separately billed monthly plan is $14.99.

Before moving your Strong workouts

  1. Export your history from Strong and keep an untouched copy. Exporting does not mean every other app can import that file.
  2. Try one existing routine in the candidate app. Check your phone or watch, rest timer, exercise names and how free history access works.
  3. If you import data, verify dates, units and a few familiar sessions. If you start fresh, retain the old log so your progress comparisons still have context.
  4. Choose after a few normal workouts.

Frequently asked questions

Which Strong alternative can import my workouts?

Hevy documents direct Strong CSV import. Follow its current instructions and verify the imported data. Setlane does not currently offer that import.

Which option should I try if I do not want a subscription?

For an Android log, FitNotes is a free, ad-free option. Strong itself also has a permanent free version, so first check whether the feature you need actually requires switching.

Should I switch if I only need more saved routines?

Compare the cost of Strong PRO with the alternative you want. Setlane Free also allows three routines, so it does not solve that specific limit. Hevy Free allows four.
